Benson went undefeated (14-0 with a 1.40 ERA) during his junior year at the University, striking out 178 batters in 142 innings thrown.

He was named Baseball America Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year as a Tiger. 

Furthermore, he departed Clemson before getting his diploma.

In terms of his professional career, Benson was selected first overall in the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft.

 On April 9, 1999, he made his major league debut.

Furthermore, his best season came with Pittsburgh in 2000, when he set career highs in earned run average, strikeouts, innings worked, and games pitched, as well as his only double-digit strikeout games.

He was eventually purchased by the New York Mets near the 2004 season’s trading deadline.
