Luke Fickell’s Professional Career
Luke’s career began at St. Francis DeSales High School. After redshirting for the Buckeyes in 1992, Fickell distinguished himself as a defensive player, setting a school record with 50 consecutive starts at nose guard from 1993 to 1996.
He lined up with Dan Wilkinson as a freshman. He was caught by a torn pectoral muscle in 1997, yet despite this, he began the 1997 Rose Bowl.
His squad won both games against Arizona State. After graduating from Ohio State in 1997, Fickell signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints and was chosen as an undrafted free agent in the NFL.
After ripping the ACL in both of his knees, he was forced to spend the rest of his tenure on the injured reserve list. The team later released him.
Luke Fickell’s Coaching Profession
After a brief stint in the NFL and as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 1999, he was hired as defensive coach at the University of Akron in 2000.
Luke stayed with the Zips for at least two seasons before returning to Ohio State in 2002. He was named special teams coordinator by Jim Tressel, the team’s second-year head coach. They both assisted and led the squad to the 2002 BCS National Championship.
Later that year, Luke Fickell reclaimed his role as linebackers coach, adding the responsibilities of co-defensive coordination in 2005.

Luke Fickell became the 39th head coach of the University of Cincinnati on December 10, 2016. In his debut season, he led the Bearcats to a 4-8 record. Luke guided his team, the Cincinnati Bearcats, to a 9-1 record in 2020.
Cincinnati’s second undefeated regular season led to the club winning the AAC Championship Game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in 2020.
Cincinnati was chosen to compete in the 2021 Peach Bowl, where they will face the #9 Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams suffered losses as a result of important players opting out, injury, or illness, including two All-Americans from Cincinnati, Ahmad Gardner, and James Wiggins.
After retaining a 21-10 lead entering the fourth quarter, Cincinnati was defeated when Georgia hit a 53-yard field goal with 7 seconds remaining in the game. By the end of the game, the overall score had risen to 24-21. Luke was named ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career at the conclusion of the game.
