Faithfull began her singing career in coffeehouses as a folk music artist in 1964. 

Andrew Loog Oldham discovered her at a Rolling Stones launch party the same year, which changed her life.

‘As Tears Go By,’ her chart-topping single, was released. Mike Jagger, Keith Richards, and Oldham wrote and composed the song.

Her stage debut as Irina in Chekhov’s ‘Three Sisters’ at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1967 launched her career as an actress. 

She appeared in the films ‘I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname’ and ‘Made in the USA’ the same year.

She also appeared in French productions such as ‘Anna,’ ‘La Motocyclette,’ and the 1969 picture ‘Lucifer Rising.’

She also had a number of successful tunes, including “Summer Nights,” “This Little Bird,” and “Come and Stay with Me.”

She was, however, having personal problems and was homeless in the 1970s.

In 1975, she released ‘Dreamin My Dreams,’ which peaked at No. 1 on the Irish Albums Chart. 

Faithfull made a comeback with the album ‘Broken English’ in 1979. 

‘Dangerous Acquaintances,’ her debut album, was published in 1981.

She released her first album, ‘Rich Kid Blues,’ in 1985, and her second, ‘Strange Weather,’ in 1987.

Suicide Attempt and Drug Addiction

In 1966, she began smoking marijuana. 

She and Mike Jagger were both involved in the Swinging London movement.

She was hooked on cocaine and had miscarried a daughter by 1968. 

She revealed in her memoirs that she was homeless and battled heroin addiction at one point.

She broke her relationship with Jagger in May 1970 and lost custody of her son the following year. 

As a result, she attempted suicide.

Marianne struggled with anorexia nervosa and heroin addiction for several years in London’s Soho streets. 

Some of her friends stepped in and forced her to enroll in an NHS medication program, where she could collect her daily prescription from a chemist.

But, she was unable to control her addiction. 

She eventually became sober, but she suffered from chronic laryngitis, and her drug usage permanently affected her voice, leaving it cracked and lower in pitch.

She was also arrested for marijuana possession in Norway.
