Mark Schlissel- Professional Career

He began his career at the college as an associate professor before being promoted to full-time professor in 2002. From 2008 to 2011, Mark served as dean of the biological sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.

Following his appointment as provost at Brown University in 2011, he has been in that position ever since.

The University of Michigan’s tuition increased to the highest level of any public university in the United States during the tenure of Mark Schlissel as president.

His professional life was launched by the controversy surrounding his posting for the position of president at the University of Michigan.

On the basis of human rights concerns and sympathy for the BDS movement, an associate professor of American culture called John Cheney-Lippold refused to sign a letter of reference for a student who was seeking admission to a university in Israel.

The student was denied admission. Because of this, the associate professor was placed on probation, with his salary being reduced and future vacations being cancelled as part of the punishment for his actions.

At the time, the institution and Mark Schlissel’s policies were questioned, with the university citing his discipline, breach of free expression, and the freedom to boycott or maintain professional independence as reasons.

Controversies

During a disagreement with an activist over the support for ongoing university involvement in the oil and gas industries, Mark got involved in an altercation.

An evening meeting with Mark Schlissel was scheduled to take place at his office in this respect following the Global Climate Strike event, with students demanding a one-hour meeting with the president of the University of California Berkeley.

Mark refused to attend the meeting for a second time, and the University of Michigan police were summoned by an unidentified administrative source.

In response to the threats, a large number of students were detained and later charged with trespassing on university premises.

The third incident occurred on the 8th of December in 2021, and it was determined that Mark was involved in an illicit relationship with a university employee at the time.

Following an inquiry, the authorities discovered that Mark was involved in email communication with a subordinate, using a University email account, which was discovered throughout the course of the investigation.

Later, it was determined that he was incompatible with the dignity and prestige of the university in question.

As a result, on January 15, 2022, the University of Michigan Board of Trustees terminated Mark from his position as the university’s president.
