Marta Kostyuk was born on June 28, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine. Marta is the daughter of Oleh Kostyuk and Talina Beiko.

Her father was the technical director of Kyiv’s Antey Cup, a junior tennis event, and her mother was a professional tennis player who rose to No. 391 on the WTA rankings and won a $10,000 title in her hometown of Kyiv in 1994.

Kostyuk began playing tennis as a child at the Antey Tennis Club on Kyiv’s west side, where her mother taught her.

“My mother was constantly busy as a coach, and the first time I went to the tennis courts to practice, I realized that if I started playing tennis, I’d be able to spend more time with her,” she said of her first tennis experience when she was five years old.

So that was my motivation – I’d be able to spend more time with her if I played tennis.” Her maternal uncle, Taras Beiko, who played for the Soviet Union and Ukraine in the late 1980s and early 1990s, also coached her. One of her siblings is Mariya Kostyuk.

Marta Kostyuk’s Professional Career

Kostyuk made her main draw tour-level debut at the Australian Open. After receiving a wild card admission into the qualifying tournament, she defeated Arina Rodionova, Daniela Seguel, and Barbora Krejková to become the first player born in 2002 to compete in a Grand Slam main draw.

By defeating Peng Shuai in the first round, Kostyuk became the youngest player to win a main-draw match in Melbourne since Martina Hingis in 1996.

In the second round, she defeated Australian wild card, Olivia Rogowska, in straight sets. Marta is the first player under 30 to reach the third round of a Grand Slam event since Mirjana Lui-Baroni in the 1997 US Open.

In the tournament, she was ranked fourth. Kostyuk had a winning record against players ranked 11–20 in the world in 2013.

On the junior circuit, Kostyuk has a career-high rating of No. 2, which he achieved on October 30, 2017. After winning the Petits As in 2016, she won the Australian Open girls’ singles titles in 2017.

In February, Kostyuk won the $60k ITF Cairo. She also won the Cairo doubles competition with Kamilla Rakhimova. Following a season-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, she competed in the Palermo Open qualifiers, making it to the second round, and the Prague Open qualifiers, making it to the main draw.

She defeated Daria Kasatkina, a former top-10 player, in straight sets in the first round of the US Open. She then defeated a previous semifinalist, Anastasija Sevastova. She faced Naomi Osaka, a former champion and world No. 9, in the third round.

Marta won the second set in a tie-breaker to make up for the first-set loss, but she was defeated in the third. In the first round of the French Open, she defeated former French Open champion Garbie Muguruza 6–1 and 6–4.

She advanced to the fourth round before being defeated by defending champion Iga Witek. She is currently competing in the Transylvania Open 2021, where she will face Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals to earn a spot in the semifinals.
