Marvin Gaye III was a singer, composer, and businessman of African-American descent. Marvin Gaye III popularized songs like “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” He was instrumental in the establishment of Motown Records. He is best known for his 1982 smash track “Sexual Healing,” which spent ten weeks at the top of the Hot Black Singles chart and was usually recognized as the 1980s’ biggest R&B success.

Marvin Pentz Gay Jr., aka Marvin Gaye III, was born on April 2, 1939, in Washington, D.C. Marvin Gay Sr. was a church minister, and his mother, Alberta Gay, was a housekeeper.

Marvin grew up with his step-siblings from his mother and father’s extramarital affair.

Marvin attended Randall Junior High School after graduating from Syphax Elementary School.

He became more serious about singing in junior high and joined the Randall Junior High Glee Club, where he climbed to popularity.

Marvin briefly attended Spingarn High School before transferring to Cardozo. He was a member of Cardozo’s Dippers and D.C. Tones, two doo-wop vocal groups.

Marvin’s father’s treatment of him deteriorated as he grew older, and he couldn’t take it anymore, so he moved out and dropped out of school.

Marvin was 44 years old when he was shot by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., during an altercation on the eve of his birthday. On the night of April 1, 1984, he was shot twice.

His father was sentenced to six years suspended and five years probation, and he spent the rest of his life in care institutions before dying in 1998 at the age of 84.

Anna Gordy, Marvin Gaye III’s first wife, was 17 years his senior. They first met in 1960 and were married in 1963. They each adopted a baby boy.

When her marriage collapsed and the couple divorced, he was devastated.

In 1977, Marvin married his second wife, Janis Hunter, and they had two children. His drug addiction and mental health difficulties caused the marriage to end in 1981.

On April 1, 1984, at the age of 44, his already terrible personal life ended tragically when his father, who had always been harsh to him, shot him dead.

With a friend, Reese Palmer, he co-founded the vocal quartet The Marquees.

The band finally changed its name to ‘Harvey,’ and they started making music. They found work as session singers for other artists such as Chuck Berry.

Gaye finally went solo, releasing his first single, ‘Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide,’ in 1961. His first solo success, ‘Stubborn Kind of Fellow,’ was released in 1962.

It peaked at No. 8 on the R&B charts. He published the album ‘Let’s Get It On,’ which became a great hit in 1973.

In the late 1970s, Marvin was going through a divorce when he wrote a song called ‘Here, My Dear,’ which was dedicated to his failing marriage to his first wife, Anna Gordy.

He published his song ‘Sexual Healing,’ which became a massive hit in 1982.

He won two Grammy Awards in 1983 for ‘Sexual Healing,’ Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

Gaye also won an American Music Award for the song in the R&B-soul category.
