Michelle Gilliam was born in Long Beach, California on June 4, 1944.

She died as a result of a brain aneurysm.

Following her mother’s death, her father remarried five times. 

Phillips and her sister were raised in Mexico City, Mexico, between the ages of 6 and 12, while her father studied sociology at Mexico City College on the GI Bill. 

Sue Lyon, a former American, was a childhood friend of hers.

Life as a Couple

However, she married John Phillip for the first time on December 31, 1962. 

She met John while he was on tour with his band, the Journeymen, in California. 

He divorced his first wife and afterward married Michelle.

They shared a daughter, Chynna Phillips, who went on to become the vocalist for the 1990s pop duo Wilson Phillips. 

Following that, she married American actor Dennis Hopper, but their marriage barely lasted a year.

Phillips married for the third time in 1978 when she married actor Robert Burch. 

However, she also failed in this marriage. The couple divorced in 1981.

Phillips remarried in 1982 to American actor Grainger Hines, although the marriage was short-lived. In 1984, she divorced him.

The 18-year relationship

Michelle met her future husband, Steven Zax, in 2000. Their marriage lasted for 18 years. 

However, Zax, unfortunately, died in January 2017.

Michelle Phillips – Professional Career

Phillips’ career began when she met John Phillips, who was touring California with his band the Journeymen at the time. 

She later married him and relocated to New York. They then started writing tunes together. 

Their debut album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, was released in 1966.

Michelle co-wrote some of the band’s biggest singles, including “California Dreamin,” which appeared on their debut album. 

From 1965 to 1969, they released additional albums.

She appeared in Gram Parsons’ science fiction film Saturation 70 in 1970, but the film was never completed. 

After her band disbanded, Michelle began taking acting classes in Los Angeles.

Career in Film

Her debut film, The Last, was released in 1971. 

After two years, Michelle was cast as John Dillinger’s girlfriend in the thriller film Dillinger.

Her performance in Dillinger earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.

Phillips recorded vocals for the Cheech & Chong tune Basketball Jones, which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard singles list the same year. 

Victim of Romance, her solo album, was released in 1977.

She later appeared in the cinematic adaptation of Sidney Sheldon’s novel Bloodline. 

However, they garnered bad feedback, and her performance was panned by critics.

Similarly, Phillips published his autobiography, California Dreamin’: The True Story of the Mamas and the Papas, in 1986.

In it, Philips describes events such as her first meeting with fellow Mama, Cass Elliot, and winning 17 straight shoots at a crap table in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 

She also describes the band being broke and unable to afford the airfare back to the United States, and how her writing credit on California Dreamin’, which still nets her royalties, is still a source of income for her.
