Miguel Cotto: Birth, Parents, & Siblings

From 2001 to 2017, his professional boxing career spanned nearly two decades. In the boxing world, he will be remembered as the first Puerto Rican to win world titles in four weight classes.

He was born in Rhode Island on October 29, 1980, to Puerto Rican parents. Miguel had to return to Caguas, Puerto Rico, before the age of two.

Boxing genes were clearly present in his family, with several of his relatives involved in the sport.

His late father, Miguel Cotto Snr, his second cousin Abner Cotto, his former boxing trainer and uncle Evangelista Cotto, and his brother Jose Miguel Cotto were all successful boxers.

Miguel Cotto: Professional Career

Miguel began his career as a hard hitter and pressure fighter, but as he progressed through the weight classes, he evolved into a more calculated and refined boxer/puncher.

Miguel was overweight as a child and began boxing to lose weight. He had no idea boxing would become a career option for him at the time.

His uncle took him to the Bairoa Gym in Caguas, where he trained as an amateur fighter. His career began when he won a decision over former world title contender John Brown in the tenth round.

Cotto had a career-threatening injury in 2001 when he was driving to a gymnasium at 5:00 a.m. and was involved in a car accident, breaking his arm and requiring hospitalization to recover fully.

Cotto finished his boxing career with a total of 47 fights and 41 victories. Out of the 41 victories, 33 were by knockout, leaving Cotto with six career defeats.

Cotto is widely regarded as Puerto Rico’s most successful sporting export, and he is regarded as one of his country’s best boxers, alongside Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad, Wilfred Benitez, Hector Camacho, and Carlos Ortiz.

One of his more memorable fights was against Antonio Margarito, which ended in a bloody defeat for Cotto.

Officials discovered that Margarito’s hands were wrapped in a loaded substance believed to be plaster of Paris during his subsequent fight against Shane Mosley.

Margarito is widely believed to have used the same trick to defeat Miguel Cotto earlier this year.

Three and a half years later, Miguel faced Margarito in the second defense of his WBA title, and this time, Miguel delivered a brutal retaliation.

Margarito had been hit in the right eye during his fight with Manny Pacquiao a year before. Miguel aimed his vengeance solely at Margarito’s right eye, leaving it a swollen, bloody mess in one of the bloodiest fights ever.

Margarito had to stop fighting for more than four years to recover from the injuries he received.

He founded and ran a boxing promotion called “Promociones Miguel Cotto” after retiring from professional and competitive boxing. The agency organizes fights, but it is limited geographically to Puerto Rico.

He also founded a non-profit organization called “El Angel” to promote physical activity and to combat infant fatness, which he suffered from.

Miguel Cotto: Relationship Status

He is married to a woman he describes as the “love of his life,” despite previous relationships. Cotto married Melissa Guzman in 1998, and the couple is the parents of three children.

They named their first daughter Alondra Cotto and their second child and first son Miguel Cotto III after themselves.

Luiz Cotto is his last son. The marriage hit a snag when it was discovered that Cotto had an extramarital affair, which resulted in the birth of a daughter in November 2006.

Cotto’s boxing brother, Jose Cotto, passed away on January 3rd, 2010. Juana Vasquez is his mother’s name.
