Richard Michael DeWine (born January 5, 1947) is an American politician and retired solicitor who currently serves as Ohio’s 70th governor. DeWine, a Republican, is a former United States Senator who was elected in 1994 and re-elected in 2000. DeWine stood for re-election to a third term in 2006, but was defeated by the Democratic candidate, U.S. Representative Sherrod Brown.

Mike DeWine: Professional Career

DeWine began his career at the age of 25 as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Greene County, Ohio, and was named County Prosecutor in 1976, serving for four years. He was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1980 and completed one two-year term.

Later, after 18 years in Congress, U.S. Representative Bud Brown of Ohio’s 7th congressional district retired; his aunt, Clarence Brown, Sr., had occupied the position for 26 years before that.

DeWine was elected in November after winning the Republican nomination. He was re-elected three times from this area, which extends from his Springfield home to the Columbus suburbs. In 1986, he ran unopposed in what is widely viewed as a poor year for Republicans nationwide.

DeWine resigned his position in 1990 to pose as George Voinovich’s running mate for Lieutenant Governor of Ohio.

The ticket of Voinovich and DeWine was comfortably elected. DeWine stood unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1992 against retired astronaut and sitting Senator John Glenn.
