He transferred to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he played as a backup to starter Marquise Williams in 2014 after redshirting his freshman year.
He quickly took over the starting quarterback position in his junior year in 2016, recording 3,748 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions by the end of the season. Following a successful junior season, he was named to the All-ACC third team (Atlantic Coast Conference).
