Nicky Henderson is a British racehorse trainer who is regarded as one of the most successful in history. Among his many accomplishments over his career, he was the four-time jump racing Champion Trainer. With almost 60 wins, he is also considered the most successful Cheltenham trainer.

Nicky Henderson was born Nicholas John Henderson in Broxburn, West Lothian, on December 10, 1950.

His father, stockbroker Johnny Henderson, was also a director of Barclays Bank and a member of the Jockey Club, although Henderson inherited more of his father’s horse racing love than his mother, Katherine Sarah Beckwith-Smith.

Nicky grew up knowing the racing world and riding and training horses as the son of Johnny Henderson, the founder of Racecourse Holdings.

He went to Eton College and began his career as an amateur jockey.

From 1974 to 1978, he worked as an assistant trainer for Fred Winter before establishing himself as a trainer in Lambourn, Berkshire.

In 1985, he won the Champion Hurdle with See You Then, which was his first racing success.

He went on to win the same competition two more times before winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1992 with the horse Remittance Man.

His next triumph would not come for another decade, when his horse Punjabi won the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2009, beating Binocular.

Punjabi would win the Champion Hurdle again the following year. Long Run, Nicky’s horse, won the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and Bobs Worth, Nicky’s horse, won the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

After that, he’d win for the fifth time, tying Peter Easterby’s record.

Henderson also owned the horse Zaynar, which won one race, and Nicky’s record and net wealth continued to rise.

He is one of the most successful active trainers, with only Willie Mullins having won more races.

After that, Henderson primarily relied on jockey Mick Fitzgerald until the latter was forced to retire due to injury.
