Subsequently, as a junior golfer, he competed in American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) competitions from 1987 to 1989.

After winning two AJGA tournaments, the Southwestern Junior and the Meridian Junior Classic, he was awarded a Rolex Junior All-American in 1987.

Begay participated in a variety of sports during high school.

In New Mexico, he led his basketball team to back-to-back state titles and won all-state accolades in both basketball and soccer.

Begay began his professional golf career while still in high school.

He was an All-American and the No. 2 golfer in the country during his high school years.

In his final year of high school, he was also named New Mexico’s high school athlete of the year.

He convinced a Stanford coach that he was extraordinary.

Begay was a superb athlete but not a top student.

His father, Notah II, told Stanford Magazine in 2001 that when Begay started getting recruited by Stanford, his pals thought he’d never get in.

Begay, on the other hand, saw it as a challenge and became resolved to attend Stanford.
