Oksana Masters is a paralympic athlete from the United States who competed in cross-country skiing, rowing, cycling, and biathlon. She has won multiple medals in world cups, world championships, and paralympic summer-winter sports and was a part of the US summer Paralympic squad.

Oksana Masters began rowing at the age of 13 in 2002, shortly before her right leg was amputated, and she continued after that. She went on to compete in the CRASH-B Sprints in 2010, where she set a world record.

Oksana Masters was born on June 19, 1989, in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, with several radiation-induced defects at the time of her birth, including tibial hemimelia (different leg lengths), calves without weight-bearing shinbones, webbed fingers with no thumbs, and six toes on each foot.

As a result of these defects, her biological parents abandoned her at a Ukrainian orphanage, where she lived until she was seven years old. Gay Masters, an unmarried American speech therapist professor at the University of Buffalo, NY, adopted her after that.

According to several internet sources, Oksana completed her education at Atherton High School in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2008, and subsequently graduated from DeVry University with a degree in Business Management.

She began rowing at the age of 13 in 2002, shortly before her right leg was amputated, and she continued after that. She went on to compete in the CRASH-B Sprints in 2010, where she set a world record.

She has created a reputation for herself by becoming the first adaptive sculler to compete in the Indianapolis Rowing Club’s ‘Head of the Eagle’ race, where she won the women’s open singles category.

In 2011, Oksana finished second in the Adaptive World Championship trials in West Windsor, New Jersey, with her teammate Augusto Perez. Oksana linked up with Rob Jones, a US Marine Corps veteran who lost his legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan, while training for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Then they were known as ‘Team Bad Company,’ and they went on to win the Adaptive World Championships Trials as well as the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta by large percentages.

With a final time of 4:05.56 at the 2012 London Paralympics, they finished third and became the first-ever United States medalist in trunk and arms mixed double sculls. Since winning a bronze medal at the 2012 London Paralympics, Oksana has retired from competitive rowing due to a back ailment. She began paracycling and cross-country skiing after that.

Oksana Masters has two bronze World Cup medals under her belt, as well as a bronze medal at the UCI Para-Cycling Worlds. She competed in hand-cycling events at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, where she placed fourth in the road race and fifth in the timed trial. She went on to win five medals in those Games, three in cross-country skiing and two in biathlon. She won a gold medal in the 5 km sitting event of cross-country skiing and a bronze medal in the 12 km sitting event of cross-country skiing.

In the 6 km sitting biathlon and the 12.5 km sitting biathlon, she won silver medals. In the 2021 World Para Snow Sports Championships in Lillehammer, Norway, she earned silver in the women’s 6 km sitting biathlon event. She also took bronze in the women’s ten-kilometer seated biathlon. She earned the gold medal in the women’s long-distance sitting event in cross-country skiing.
