Who is Philo Farnsworth?

Philo Taylor Farnsworth is an inventor. Philo Farnsworth invented the first fully operational all-electronic picture pickup device.

He was also the first to show the technology to the general public.

Farnsworth developed a television system with a camera and receiver, which he commercialized in Fort Wayne, Indiana, under the name Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation.

The famed American inventor also invented a simple nuclear fusion device known as the Farnsworth-Hirsch fusor.

While not practical for producing nuclear energy, this device does serve as a useful supply of neutrons.

Farnsworth’s innovations also enabled the development of the gastroscope, astronomical telescope, infant incubator, and electron microscope.

As a result of all of his achievements, he got numerous awards and prizes.

Numerous memorials have been erected in his honor, as have a few streets and accolades; two of these are The Philo Awards (an annual public-access television cable competition) and “The Genius of Green Street.”

The Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco constructed a statue of the famed innovator to honor him.

Philo Farnsworth was born on August 19, 1906, in Utah, United States, as one of five children of Serena Amanda Bastian and Lewis Edwin Farnsworth.

He had two sisters, one of them was Agnes and two brothers.

He had his first phone conversation with a relative who resided out of state, and that conversation piqued his interest in technology.

He invented a magnetized car lock, which helped him win first place in a pulp magazine competition for $25.

He was a standout physics and chemistry student at Rigby High School.

He once showed his teacher schematics and sketches that filled multiple blackboards to explain how the practical execution of an electronic television system could be accomplished.

Following that, Farnsworth attended Brigham Young High School, where he graduated in 1924.

His father died when he was still in high school, leaving young Philo to care for his family on his own.

Later, he attended Brigham Young University and was qualified as a Junior Radio-Tricia by the National Radio Institute.

Farnsworth was then enlisted by the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis after receiving the nation’s second-best score on academy tests.

He left the academy, however, to pursue advanced science studies at Brigham Young University.

Farnsworth met George Everson and Leslie Gorrell while working for the University of Utah’s job placement department.

Later, as part of his early television research, the duo supplied cash for Farnsworth to create a laboratory and conduct his testing.

In September 1927, Farnsworth’s camera tube sent the first image to a receiver in a different lab room.

Farnsworth’s most major contribution to ITT was the development of the PPI Projector, which ultimately evolved into the predecessor to the contemporary air traffic control system.
