Polona made her WTA Tour debut at Portoroz in 2007, losing in three sets against Elena Vesnina. She was spotted competing in the Istanbul Cup in 2008 when she lost in the first round to Tsvetana but advanced to the doubles finals with Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.
She went on to win two Grand Slam junior doubles titles with Jessica Moore of Australia. Polona qualified for the 2009 Grand Prix SAR la Princesse Lalla Meryem in Morocco, where she defeated seventh seed Robert Vinci and advanced to the quarter-finals, where she lost to Alisa Kleybanova.
Polona began the 2010 ASB Classic season by losing to Shahar Peer in the opening round of the competition. Polona then defeated Rossana de Rios, Alize Cornet, and Agnes Szavay in the first, second, and third rounds, respectively, to reach her maiden WTA Tour singles final and win her first WTS Tour doubles title.
Despite winning the first set, she went on to lose to Venus Williams. Polona began her career in 2011 at Brisbane International, where she was defeated in the first round by Iveta Benesova. At the Medibank International Sydney, she advanced to the second round of qualifying after losing in the first round to Jill Craybas.
