He began working at a young age, first as a busboy, then as a janitor.

When he became the vice president of Exxon Ventures, he continued to grow within the corporation, and his net worth increased dramatically.

He was designated executive vice president of ExxonMobile Development Company after Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999, then president and director of Exxon Mobil in 2004, before eventually replacing Lee Raymond as CEO two years later. The corporation had already expanded to 200 countries, with 80,000 employees, and a $400 billion yearly income.

Tillerson has had contacts with President Vladimir Putin since Exxon expanded their business into Russia. He developed acquaintances with a number of other oil executives in the area, and he went on to serve on the board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
