Rex grew raised in Vernon, Texas, before moving with his family to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and finally to Huntsville, Texas. He was raised by two sisters and was particularly engaged in the Boy Scouts of America organization during his adolescence, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He began working at a young age, first as a busboy, then as a janitor.

He went to Huntsville High School and was a member of the school band’s percussion section as well as the all-district and all-region bands during his senior year.

He attended the University of Texas on a college scholarship for the Longhorn Band after matriculating and was also a member of the Tejas Club marching band throughout his time there. When he became the vice president of Exxon Ventures, he continued to grow within the corporation, and his net worth increased dramatically.

He was designated executive vice president of ExxonMobile Development Company after Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999, then president and director of Exxon Mobil in 2004, before eventually replacing Lee Raymond as CEO two years later. The corporation had already expanded to 200 countries, with 80,000 employees, and a $400 billion yearly income.
