When he became the vice president of Exxon Ventures, he continued to grow within the corporation, and his net worth increased dramatically.

He was designated executive vice president of ExxonMobile Development Company after Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999, then president and director of Exxon Mobil in 2004, before eventually replacing Lee Raymond as CEO two years later.
