In 1989, Lightfoot began his career at NASA as a test engineer and program manager. 

In 1998, he was appointed deputy division chief of Marshall’s propulsion test division.

He was promoted to chief of propulsion test operations at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center the following year. 

Three years later, he was promoted to deputy director of the Stennis Propulsion Test Directorate. 

He was named the Marshall Space Flight Center’s ninth director in 2009.

Then, from 2003 to 2005, Robert worked as an assistant associate administrator for the Space Shuttle Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

He also served as Marshall’s deputy director before retiring in 2007.

Robert was appointed as the space agency’s acting Associate Administrator in 2012.
