Rosie O’Donnell posted a TikTok video in February detailing an embarrassing encounter with Priyanka Chopra and her husband, Nick Jonas, at Nobu in Malibu.
When the comic went over to welcome the Chopra-Jonas couple, she was having dinner with her son and his girlfriend. She complimented Nick on his performance in Kingdom.
“Who is my father?” Rosie stated boldly, “Deepak Chopra.”
“No….and Chopra is a common name,” the Bollywood star said, puzzled.
Because they have the same surname, the talk show host confused Deepak Chopra, an Indian-American author, for Priyanka’s father.
She mistakenly believed Nick Jonas was married to Deepak Chopra’s daughter.
At the end of the TikTok video, Rosie expressed her embarrassment and apologized to the couple for the misunderstanding.
She had never addressed the Quantico star by her first name, instead referring to her as “Someone Chopra” and “The Chopra wife.”
Her apologies were not genuine, and viewers believed it was ethnically offensive to assume all Indians with similar surnames are related.
Furthermore, her tone of apology came across as condescending.
Chopra responded on her Instagram story, saying that the comedian should have Googled her name or just reached out individually before making a public apology for a private problem.
“We ALL deserve to be respected for our unique individuality and not be referred to as someone’ or ‘wife,’, especially in a sincere apology,” the Bollywood actor tweeted.
O’Donnell apologized to Priyanka in another TikTok video.
On the show “The View” in 2005, the comedian outraged the Asian community by insulting Chinese people’s accents with the racial slur “ching chong.”
“Apparently, ‘ching-chong’ is a very offensive way to mock Asians,” she remarked. Some have said it’s as nasty as the n-word. Was I likable? That was new to me.”
The 60-year-old actress then apologized for the ridicule but added that she might do something similar again, though not purposefully, because that is how her brain works.
