Roy Underhill- Professional Career

Roy Underhill began his career as a theatre director in Colorado, where he gathered a group of people who were as enthusiastic about acting as he was. Unfortunately, the other part of Roy’s dream never came true because his group was unable to gain attention for their production.

As a result, Roy left directing and his group, which he dubbed “Homestead Arts,” and relocated to New Mexico, where he joined a socialist commune allegedly developing utopian plans to change society. Roy moved back to North Carolina to finish his undergraduate education, clearly seeing that this was not life for him.

Roy wowed his teachers so much during his demonstration of skills at Duke University that one of them suggested he show his tricks on television.

Roy liked the notion and decided to take the advice. He created the shop he dubbed “The Woodright’s Shop” after being inspired by his successful presentation, despite the fact that the term “woodright” does not exist and was invented by him.

Customers who came to buy wooden objects Roy manufactured to improve his carpentry talents were not confused by the name. Roy addressed the local PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) station, feeling ready to present his work on television, but his suggestion was rejected.

Roy returned the following year, armed with all of his equipment and ready to shoot a pilot episode to demonstrate his serious intentions. His concept was finally accepted, and the show premiered in 1979.

During this time, Roy was also hired as a carpenter at the Colonial Williamsburg reconstruction center, which gave him more opportunity to work on interesting projects because the firm built houses from 18th-century guides, dubbed “the new houses from the past.”
