On August 13, 2005, Karaev made his K-1 tournament debut as a virtual unknown in the K-1 World GP 2005 in Las Vegas. 

He capped off his night with a unanimous decision victory over American Scott Lighty and was proclaimed tournament champion.

Following that, he won the fight unanimously and earned his maiden appearance in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2005 Finals on September 23. 

In 2007, he was knocked out twice in a row by Badr Hari and Melvin Manhoef.

He then defeated the new and current heavyweight champion, Keijiro Maeda, in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Final 16.

Furthermore, he was slated to battle Le Banner in Yokohama in April 2010, however, the match was canceled due to an injured knee. 

Tyrone Spong took over for Karaev. Karaev made his comeback in October 2013, signing with the Moldovan-based King of Kings promotion, after a three-year hiatus due to a knee injury and a falling out with Golden Glory.
