Ryan began his college career at Boston University in 2001 after playing for his high school team from Thayer Academy and the USA National Development Program.

Whitney participated in the 1997 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a South Shore minor ice hockey team. Ryan became an unrestricted free agent following the 2013-14 season.
Ryan moved to the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after failing to sign a contract with an NHL team, and on October 16, 2014, Ryan signed a contract with HC Sochi.
He made his debut for USA Hockey at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in 2000. Ryan appeared in six games, scoring his first international goal.
The United States finished fourth in the tournament. Ryan scored 19 points in 42 games for Sochi in their inaugural season in 2014-15.
