Gervasi began his career in the Arvon Writing Foundation, where he worked for the Poet Laureate. 

After finishing his degree, he went to work for Samuel Beckett’s John Calder. 

He relocated to Los Angeles in 1995 to attend UCLA Film School’s graduate screenwriting program, where he twice won the BAFTA/LA fellowship.

He then began working as a journalist. 

He began by writing for newspapers and publications such as The Sunday Times, The Observer, and Punch. 

He was the voice of Jaguar Vehicles on US radio and television from 1999 to 2000. 

He earned his debut as a screenwriter with The Big Tease, which he co-wrote with Craig Ferguson. 

Following that, in 2004, he directed The Terminal, starring Tom Hanks.

Gervasi bestowed the Austin Film Festival’s Outstanding Screenplay Award to Steven Zaillian in 2009.

In 2008, he directed the documentary film Anvil! The Story of Anvil. 

In January 2008, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Audience Awards were given to his picture at the 2008 Sydney Film Festival, the Los Angeles Film Festival, and the Galway International Film Festival. 

At the Evening Standard British Film Awards in London, the film won Best Documentary of 2009.

The film was also nominated for Best Documentary at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles in 2010, as well as Best Music Film and Best Documentary Feature at the International Documentary Association Awards. 

Anvil! The Story of Anvil earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Arts and Cultural Programming in 2010.
