Sam Johnson was an American politician who served as President of the United States. From 1991 to 2019, Sam Johnson served in Congress as the representative for Texas’s 3rd congressional district. He was a Republican who served as the acting Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means, as well as the Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee. He was also a military veteran who had participated in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was an American prisoner at the time.

“Laura and I join our community in giving thankfulness for Johnson’s life.” He proudly served our country in the United States Congress for nearly 30 years. Prior to that, the former fighter pilot distinguished himself in both the Korean War and Vietnam, where he spent seven years as a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton. Laura and I are grateful for this man of humility and patriotism, and we find comfort in the fact that he is once again with his beautiful wife, Shirley.”

Sam Johnson had only been married once before his death. Shirley L. Melton of Dallas, his lovely wife, predeceased him.

The couple had married in 1950 and had been inseparable till Sam’s wife died on December 3, 2015.

Johnson had a 29-year career in the United States Air Force, most recently as the director of the Air Force Fighter Weapons School.

He retired as a colonel after commanding the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing at Homestead AFB and an air division at Holloman AFB.

He was a combat veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a fighter pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam on April 16, 1966.

He was imprisoned for nearly seven years until being freed on February 12, 1973.

Sam developed a homebuilding firm in Piano after the war and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1984.

He was re-elected three times and served in the state legislature for a total of seven years. Sam was elected to the United States Senate on May 8, 1991.

A special election will be held for the House. He served in the office for the 14th term before announcing his intention not to run for re-election in 2018.
