Samuel Baldwinmarks Young was born on January 9, 1840, in Pennsylvania. In 1866, President Andrew Johnson named Young to the post of Brigadier General of Volunteers. In 1864, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Army of the Potomac. He went on to serve in the Appomattox Campaign.
