Sam won by knockout in his debut match.

Langford was given the opportunity to compete for the lightweight division world champion title against Joe Grans shortly after his professional debut.

Joe Grans became the first African-American to win a world title.

The bout lasted 15 rounds until Sam was proclaimed the winner.

After it was discovered that he weighed slightly more than the 135-pound weight limit, he was not awarded the championship belt.

However, Sam Langford would be denied a title several times in the future.
