She became a board member of Equality Delaware in January 2014. She quickly rose to prominence as the state’s top advocate for hate crimes and legal protection for transgender Delawareans.

She has defended many Delawareans who have faced discrimination because of their gender, as well as provided assistance in employment, housing, insurance, public accommodations, and other areas.

She was also the legislation’s major spokesman. In 2017, she also aided in the passage of laws to protect vulnerable children from child abuse.

McBride previously worked with the LGBT Progress team at the Center for American Progress. She has spoken at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner, the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Dinner, the Victory Fund National Brunch, and institutions including the University of Pennsylvania and Gettysburg College.

In fact, she gave a TED Talk in April 2016 titled Gender assigned to us at birth should not govern who we are.

She has been featured in several newspapers, channels, and magazines, including North Carolina Public Radio, The New Yorker, MSNBC, ThinkProgress, Buzzfeed, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Al Jazeera, PBS NewsHour, and many more. Sarah launched her candidacy for Delaware Senate candidate on July 9, 2019, and after winning the primaries, she was advanced to the general election on September 15, 2020.

She has promised to make healthcare cheaper, increase paid leave, support public schools, and to improve the criminal justice system. She has also taught public policy at the Biden Institute at the University of Delaware.

Her victory for Delaware State Senator was certified in November 2020, and she is scheduled to take office in January 2021. She made history by becoming the first transgender state senator in the United States and one of the highest-ranking transgender officials.
