Westbrook allegedly went on a “tirade” about simple heckling, according to Keisel.
“The lawsuit is without merit,” said a source near to Westbrook to TMZ Sports. “The Jazz undertook their own inquiry into the guy’s behavior at that event, and based on their findings, they voted to exclude him from playing all subsequent Jazz games.”
Keisel is suing for $68 million in fees, and his partner, Jennifer Huff, is suing for $32 million. Westbrook and the Jazz were both asked to issue a formal apology to the pair.
Attorneys for Keisel contend in the filing that the Jazz made their decision without video documentation that corroborated Westbrook’s arguments that the heckling was racist in nature. The Jazz barred Keisel from attending all potential activities at the team’s home venue, Vivint Smart Home Arena, for “excessive and derogatory verbal harassment aimed at the athlete.”
Jazz also denied the allegations in the lawsuit. “We agree these charges against the Utah Jazz have no legal or logical basis,” the team said in a statement to FOX Business. “The company conducted an investigation of the underlying event and behaved appropriately and responsibly. We hope to aggressively protect ourselves in the lawsuit.”
Westbrook said that Keisel instructed him to “get down on your knees like you used to.” A video of Westbrook threatening Keisel and his girlfriend quickly went viral on social media. The NBA punished Westbrook $25,000 at the time for his conduct.
