Stephen McNair – Professional Career

Macnair began his professional career with the Oilers in 1995 when head coach Jeff Fisher signed him to a seven-year contract.

In 1998, he set career passing records with 492 attempts, 3228 yards, and 15 touchdowns. 

After the season, Macnair agreed to a new 6-year contract for $47 million.

He joined the Baltimore Ravens as a rookie in 2006. That season, he started every game. 

He threw the longest touchdown pass of the season in Ravens history.

Following Tennessee’s 36-35 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Macnair was diagnosed with an irritated disk and required surgery early in the 1999 season. 

Neil O’Donnell, a veteran who had led the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl four years before, took his place.

O’Donnell guided the Titans to a 4-1 record over the next five games. 

McNair returned to the St. Louis Rams, and with McNair at quarterback, Tennessee won seven of its last nine games, finishing 13-3 and second in the AFC Central.

Following the 2005 season, the Titans permitted McNair and his agent, Bus Cook, to negotiate with the Ravens on April 30, 2006, in an attempt to work out a deal.

The Baltimore Sun speculated on May 1, 2006, that the Ravens might wait for McNair to be released by the Titans during free agency.

McNair announced his retirement from the NFL in April 2008, after thirteen seasons.
