to Alabama-born CIA officer Miles Copeland Jr. and Scottish archaeologist Lorraine Adie.
After his family relocated to Beirut, Lebanon, in 1957, Copeland attended the American Community School.
When he was 12 years old, he began taking drum lessons there, and within a year, he was playing the drums at school dances.
He resided in UK from 1967 to 1969 and attended Millfield boarding school in Somerset.
Copeland studied at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as the United States International University in California.
He returned to England and worked as the road manager for Curved Air’s 1974 reunion tour,
in addition to playing drums for the band in 1975 and 1976.
