Benoit has been involved in the music industry since 1987. 

He began his career at a Baton Rouge music club and cultural center headed by guitarist Tabby Thomas.

Eventually, in 1987, he created a trio and began performing in Baton Rouge and New Orleans bars.

In 1993, he signed with Texas-based Justice Records and released his first album, Sweet and Warm. Following the success of his first album, he began to create a series of albums.

In 1994, he released What I Live For, in 1995, Standing on the Bank, in 1997, Swampland Jam, in 1998, and in 1999, he released Homesick for the Road.

Before the 2000s, he worked each of his records the old-fashioned way, playing wherever and everywhere.

Whiskey Store was released in 2002 by Benoit, Jimmy Thackery, Charlie Musselwhite, Tommy Shannon, and Chris Layton. 

In 2003, he released Sea Saint Recordings, which was recorded at Big Easy Recording Studio in New Orleans.

He has performed alongside Jimmy Thackery at the Unity Centre for Performing Arts in Unity, Maine. 

Medicine and Box of Images – Voice of the Wetlands Allstars was released in 2011.

In 2012, he released Legacy: The Best of, and in 2015, he released Night Train.

In addition to his musical career, he is an actor, having participated in the IMAX film Hurricane on the Bayou. 

He is also the proprietor of Tab Benoit’s Lagniappe Music Cafe in Houma, Louisiana.
