Titi Alakija- Professional Career
Kofi Annan began working as a budget officer for the World Health Organization, a United Nations organization, in 1962. (UN).
He served as a manager for the state-owned Ghana Tourist Development Company in Accra from 1974 until 1976.
In 1980, he was appointed as the head of personnel for the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Geneva.
In 1983, he was appointed director of administrative management services at the United Nations Secretariat in New York.
Annan was named the UN system’s Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management and Security Coordinator in 1987.
He was appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Program Planning, Budget and Finance, and Control in 1990.
When Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali established the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) in 1992, Annan was named Deputy Secretary-General to then-Under-Secretary-General Marrack Goulding.
Annan was then named the department’s Under-Secretary-General in March 1993.
On August 29, 1995, while Boutros-Ghali was flying away, Annan directed UN officials to “relinquish for a limited period of time their authority to veto air strikes in Bosnia.”
This action enabled NATO forces to conduct Operation Deliberate Force, making him a darling of the US.
According to Richard Holbrooke, Annan’s “brave performance” persuaded the US that he would be a suitable alternative for Boutros-Ghali.
From November 1995 to March 1996, he served as the Secretary-Special General’s Representative to the former Yugoslavia.
