He discovered Studio 54 while studying at NYU and began focusing on acting for television advertisements. As a result, he departed NYU after only one year.

Following that, he enrolled at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City to pursue a degree in interior architecture. Ford interned at Chloe’s publicity office in Paris for a year during his last year at New School.

Gucci was just another Italian fashion brand that was struggling financially at the moment. Ford’s contribution to Gucci was extraordinary, and he soon took over as Gucci’s design director in 1992.

He quickly expanded menswear and other apparel departments, and by 1993, he was in charge of eleven product lines. Mello was the company’s public face at the time.

As a result, his presence dwarfed Ford’s contributions. In 1994, he was appointed creative director. By 1999, Gucci was nearly bankrupt, valued at $4.3 billion, and owed most of its success to Ford. When Gucci purchased the Yves Saint Laurent house in 1999, Ford also became the brand’s creative director.

Ford announced the formation of Fade to Black, his film production company, in March 2005. In 2009, he made his directorial debut with ‘A Single Man,’ based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel.
