Silva owned a 1787 Colonial mansion in Lexington. Due to rising tensions during the Cold War, many people were frightened that a nuclear war would break out.

As a result, numerous businesses seized the opportunity to sell fallout shelters that could be installed within homes.

Tom’s father shared this belief, and he intended to build a fallout shelter for his family in case their home was hit by a nuclear assault.

He assisted with the construction of a family shelter beneath the house, capable of mitigating the effects of radiation in the event of a nuclear explosion.

Many would eventually be abandoned, presumably because they were never used.

Because of its consistency and craftsmanship, the company attracted the attention of PBS, which encouraged them to become contractors for the television show “The Victory Garden.

The show was mostly about outdoor activities and gardening, but there was some background work that needed to be done, which is where the construction business stepped in.

James Underwood Crockett hosted the show at first, and it attempted to assist viewers with gardening. When Crockett died, the show was taken over by Bob Thomson.
