Tom Wolf (born November 17, 1948) is a Pennsylvania politician and businessman who has been the state’s 47th governor since January 20, 2015. He was a candidate of the Democratic Party when he ousted Republican incumbent Tom Corbett in the 2014 gubernatorial race, and he was re-elected by a majority of 17.1 percent in 2018.

Wolf served as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue from April 2007 to November 2008, as well as an executive in his family’s company, prior to his election as Governor.

According to his resume, he bought The Wolf Organization with two colleagues in 1985. Wolf sat on an industrial growth council and the Pennsylvania Legislative Commission on Urban Schools under Governor Robert P. Casey’s administration.

Wolf was named Secretary of Revenue of Pennsylvania by then-Governor Ed Rendell in January 2007, after selling his business to a private equity group in 2006.

He held the spot on Rendell’s cabinet from his appointment by the Pennsylvania State Senate in April 2007 until his resignation in November 2008.

He initially intended to run for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2010 but decided against it in order to repurchase the Wolf Organization, which was in financial trouble.

Wolf was an executive in The Wolf Organization until he was elected governor. He acted as chairman and CEO until December 2013, when he stepped down from the latter post to concentrate on his gubernatorial bid, and then from the board entirely in December 2014, after his inauguration.

He is the first governor of Pennsylvania to be elected twice though losing both times in his home city.

Wolf was born on November 17, 1948, in Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He is of white descent and has American nationality.

His father is a business executive named William Trout Wolf, and his mother is the late Cornelia Rohlman. He was baptized Methodist but now attends the Episcopal Church. Wolf received his schooling at The Hill Academy, a boarding school in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1967.

He went on to earn a B.A. in government, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1972, an M.Phil. in political science from the University of London in 1978, and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. Wolf entered the Peace Corps as an undergraduate at Dartmouth and spent two years in India.

His paper on the United States House of Representatives was deemed the best of 1981 by the American Political Science Association after he received his Ph.D.

Wolf declined an interview for a tenure-track faculty position at Harvard University in order to continue his career at The Wolf Organization as manager of a True Value store operated by the group.
