Blinken previously served as President Barack Obama’s deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017.
From November 2008 to January 2009, he was also a member of the Obama-Biden presidential transition team.

Alan Blinken, his uncle, was the United States ambassador to Belgium.
Maurice Henry Blinken, Blinken’s paternal grandfather, was an early supporter of Israel.
Blinken attended the Dalton School in New York City until 1971, when he relocated to Paris with his divorced mother and her new husband, attorney Samuel Pisar, to attend École Jeannine Manuel.
