Vanessa Bayer: Birth, Childhood & Education

The Reform Jewish (Ashkenazi Jewish descent) Bayers family settled in Orange, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States, and on November 14, 1981, they welcomed their first daughter, Vanessa Polster Bayer.

Vanessa Bayer was raised in the family home by her parents Carolyn (née Polster) and Todd Bayer, along with her brother Jonah, who is now a music journalist and drummer for the punk supergroup United Nations.

As a 7th grader in that close-knit Jewish community, she attended Bar and Bat Mitzvahs with other kids every weekend.

She had such an active childhood that when she was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 15, it didn’t dampen her spirit.

Rather, after discovering the meaning of comic relief, she employed and utilized every aspect of it while fighting the life-threatening condition. Although she wasn’t sure if it made her funnier, she claimed it miraculously made everything better, and she soon rose from her sickbed.

Bayer went to Orange High School and graduated in 2000 before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communication and French from the Annenberg School for Communication in 2004.

Vanessa Bayer also performed improv comedy as a member of Annoyance Theatre and the improvisational team at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic (iO). In the Chicago-based feature comedy Off the Cuff, she played Kate Clark.

She joined the cast of SNL as a featured player in September 2010 but was promoted to repertory status in the 2012–2013 season, having honed her comedic skills and amassed enough onions in her years of performing.

She stayed on the show for seven years, earning numerous mentions and recognitions, including nominations for the American Comedy Award and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014 and 2017, respectively.

In addition, HitFix dubbed her one of the ensemble’s strongest members, and Rolling Stone dubbed her Saturday Night Live’s secret weapon.
