New Birth Missionary Baptist Church is a megachurch located near Lithonia in DeKalb County, Georgia. The church practiced a Pentecostal theology that was unusual in African-American Baptist churches.

Scottdale’s first church was built in 1939. It was originally known as Travelers Rest Baptist Church. The church relocated to Decatur in 1983 and changed its name to New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

In La Ceiba, Honduras, the rapper was killed in a car accident. The church established another branch, “New Birth Charlotte,” in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2003.

The church, however, no longer exists, and the building was long ago sold.

According to Mecklenburg County records, the church missed payments on a $10 million loan to Evangelical Christian Credit Union.

On August 15, 2004, the church opened a new branch in Memphis, Tennessee called “New Birth Memphis.” However, the New Birth Memphis is no longer in operation.

More churches have opened, including New Birth Metro, New Birth Oakland, New Birth Knoxville, and New Birth California.

In 2006, the family of Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow, Coretta Scott King, chose the church to host and officiate at her funeral. Four former US Presidents attended the funeral: George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter.

Bishop Eddie Long died on January 15, 2017, from an aggressive form of cancer, according to a church statement. Eddie’s successor at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia is Stephen A. Davis.

Stephen was the pastor of Birmingham before becoming the pastor of New Birth Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama. He did, however, resign in June 2018.

On November 19, 2018, he was succeeded by Jamal Bryant, pastor of Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

He resigned as pastor of Empowerment Temple Church in early December 2018.
