Despite the fact that they play the most exciting role in the sport, there are those whose responsibilities fall into the less exciting categories of administration and coaching.

Wes Wilcox, the Atlanta Hawks’ current special advisor, is one of these people.

Wes Wilcox: Birth, Parents & Education

Wes Wilcox’s background is unknown because he works behind the scenes. We don’t know where he was born, but we do know where he grew up: La Habra, California.

Wes, like many other young men his age who fall in love with a sport, aspired to be a basketball coach after developing a strong interest in the sport at a young age.

It was a passion that drove him to become a player first, to understand what goes through a player’s mind while on the court, to feel what it’s like to have hundreds of people cheering for or against you.

Wes joined his high school’s basketball team, St. Paul High School, and despite not having the best physical appearance or skill, he helped his school win a championship in 1997.

His whirlwind romance as an active player even landed him a scholarship to Whittier College.

Wes Wilcox: Professional Career

He, on the other hand, was a man with only one interest. He chose to retire early and pursue a coaching career in order to become a basketball coach.

He attended a coaching clinic at UCLA and coached at his former high schools, St. Paul and Orange High School, during his college years.

His desire to meet different professionals in the industry and network with other aspiring and established coaches led him to transfer from Whittier College to Purdue University, then to Cal Poly Pomona, and finally to Cal State Fullerton, where he completed his education.

Wes was named manager of the Fullerton men’s basketball team in the year 2000. He spent a year at Fullerton under the direction of the team’s coach, Donny Daniels, where he learned the ins and outs of a basketball program and gained valuable experience for his future career.

Wes landed his first NBA job as an intern for the Miami Heat’s scouting/video department after a year at Fullerton. He was at Miami for a year before his abilities and talent were recognized, and he was transferred to New Orleans, where he served as the team’s video coordinator from 2002 to 2003.

Wilcox’s rise in the league continued after he left New Orleans. From 2003 to 2010, he was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he served in a variety of roles.

He began his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers as an advance scout and finished as the team’s Director of Player Personnel. During his time with the team, he held positions such as College scout and Assistant coach.

Wes was named assistant general manager of the Atlanta Hawks after eight years with the Cavaliers. He held this position from 2012 to 2015.

Wes’ dream of becoming a basketball administrator came true on June 30, 2015, when he was named General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks.

He was the Hawks’ general manager for two years before being named Special Advisor. On May 5, 2017, he took over as CEO.
