He earned the Novice A category gold medal at the “2007 Japan Novice Championships” after his home rink reopened in 2007, and then the “2007-08 Japan Junior Championships” bronze medal.

He competed in his first international junior competition, the “2008-09 ISU Junior Grand Prix,” finishing sixth overall and fourth in the short program and free skating, respectively.

Later that season, at the age of 13, he won the Japan Junior Championship, qualifying for the senior level at the 2008-09 Japan Championships, where he finished eighth.

He won both competitions, and he finished first in the “Junior Grand Prix Final” and first in the “Japan Junior Championships” in the 2009-10 season.

He won the “Junior Grand Prix Final” with a new personal best score at the “Japan Championships,” where he received a second invitation to compete at the senior level, before taking first place at the “2010 World Junior Championships.”

He advanced to the senior level during the 2010-11 season, competing in the 2010 NHK Trophy, where he finished fourth overall, and the 2010 Cup of Russia, where he finished seventh.

He was selected to compete in the “2011 Four Continents Championships” after finishing fourth in the “2010-11 Japan Championships,” where he set a new personal best score and won a silver medal.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, he won Japan’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s figure skating. To cap off the year, he won the 2014 World Figure Skating Championship in Saitama, Japan.

In the 2016-17 season, he successfully defended both his Grand Prix Final and World Championship titles, becoming the first skater to land a quadruple loop in the process.

In 2017-18, he battled injuries that kept him off the ice for two months and limited him to three games.

He did, however, successfully defend his Olympic title at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, a feat not accomplished since Dick Button won back-to-back gold medals in 1948 and 1952.
