Richard Hatch: Birth, Parents, Siblings & Education

Richard Lawrence Hatch was born in Santa Monica, California on May 21, 1945. He was one of John Raymond Hatch’s and Elizabeth Hatch’s (neé White’s) five children.

Destiny, on the other hand, had other plans. Hatch had no intention of becoming an actor because he considered himself an extremely shy child, but after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, he developed an interest in acting. At the time, he was a freshman at Harbor College in San Pedro.

Richard Hatch: Professional Career

Richard Hatch joined the Los Angeles Repertory Theater and frequently traveled to New York, where he began his acting career on stage.

Off-Broadway and in Chicago, he also performed. Among the plays he presented were “Song of Walt Whitman” and “Young Rebels.”

Hatch then made the transition to television, beginning with the daytime soap opera All My Children. He then appeared in Nakia, Barnaby Jones, Cannon, and other films.

Hatch also appeared in television movies such as Addie and the King of Hearts, The Hatfields and McCoys, Deadman’s Curve, and others.

Hatch quickly established a name for himself on the small screen. His first major TV role was in The Streets of San Francisco, where he played Inspector Dan Robbins for a season, earning him a Bravo Youth Magazine Award.

Hatch’s biggest break came in 1978, when he starred in the science fiction TV series Battlestar Galactica, which developed a cult following but was sadly canceled due to its high production costs. Hatch was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as Captain Apollo.

His subsequent television credits include Fantasy Island, T.J. Hooker, MacGyver, CHiPs, Dynasty, The Love Boat, Baywatch, and Murder She Wrote.

Hatch began appearing in theatrical films in the early 1980s, including Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen, Prisoners of the Lost Universe, Party Line, Last Platoon, and others.

Hatch was the driving force behind the revival of the Battlestar Galactica series, and he later wrote and starred in the fan film Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming (1999).

In 2003, Hatch played a different character, rebel Tom Zarek, in the reimagined version of Battlestar Galactica. Though his activity dwindled after the turn of the millennium, Hatch continued to work on occasion, such as in 2014, when he appeared in Prelude to Axanar.

He died with his only son Paul by his side after being placed in hospice care at his home in Santa Clarita, California. He was 71 years old at the time.

Richard Hatch: Gay or not

Richard Hatch, the gay actor, was not gay; however, his namesake Richard Hatch from the reality show Survivor, with whom he was always confused, is gay.

He once told the media about his name-sharing with the Survivor contestant, saying:

“We forget that there are other people with our name, and we somehow feel a sense of ownership over our name. To be honest, this is one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me, and I’m having to deal with it.”
