Corey Knebel- Professional Career
Corey began his baseball career in high school, when he was a member of the school team. He was a letter winner for three years in a row and a district MVP.
He played three high school seasons with the Bastrop High School team before transferring to the Georgetown High School team for his senior year. Later, Corey enrolled at the University of Texas to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level. He joined the Texas Longhorns baseball team as a freshman and served as the team’s closer.
He was named NCBWA Stopper of the Year and Freshman of the Year for his performance as a freshman. 2012 was the team’s stopper again in his sophomore season, finishing with nine saves.
The following year, he was suspended twice for violating team rules and for providing urine samples to assist a friend in a drug test, preventing him from playing in his junior season. In his senior year, he chose to play for the Georgetown high school team.
He began his professional career in 2013 after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers, and he played for minor league teams such as the West Michigan Whitecaps, Erie Seawolves, and Toledo Mud Hens.
In 2014, Corey made his major league debut against the Texas Rangers. In 2014, he was traded to the Texas Rangers and then to the Round Rock Express. However, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers again during the 2015 season.
He was the team’s closer, and during the 2017 season, he set a record for the most consecutive appearances with at least one strikeout by a relief pitcher. He was injured the following season and was unable to play in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
He was recently traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, and he was placed on the injured list again in 2021, limiting him to only 27 games. He was named the starting pitcher for Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the San Francisco Giants, replacing Julio Urias, who was injured.
