At the time, he participated in a number of auditions. In the late 1950s, he met Sean O’ Riada and became a member of his band, Ceoltoiri Chualann. The band was formed in Dublin in November 1962 by Sean Potts and Michael Tubridy.
He was the Chieftain’s music’s leader, primary composer, and arranger. Treasure Island, The Grey Fox, Braveheart, Gangs of New York, and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lydon are among the works he composed.
They also had a slew of record labels, including Shanachie Records, Mercury Records, RCA Victor, and Hear Music.
He also worked as a session musician for artists and groups such as Mike Oldfield, The Muppets, Mike Jagger, Gary Moore, Paul McCartney, Sting, Don Henley, and Stevie Wonder, among others.
In addition, he was a producer for Garech de Brun, which he founded at Claddagh Records in 1959. He retired later in life and enjoyed spending time with his family.
