Etienne has worked in political communications since 2001. Beginning in 2001, she worked as the communications director for Ken Bentsen, a Texas state legislator.
From 2001 through 2013, she worked as the director of communications for the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, where she collaborated closely with Elijah Cummings.
In 2004, Etienne served as Chris Bell’s communications director, and later as the Democratic National Committee’s southern region deputy director.
From 2006 through 2008, Etienne served as Al Green’s communications director. In 2008, she worked at Dewey Square Group for a short time before joining Barack Obama’s presidential campaign as a spokeswoman. She also ran her own communications agency for a short time in 2009.
In 2013, she became Nancy Pelosi’s assistant director of communications, focusing on the messaging of new members of Congress. Ashley served for Obama’s cabinet as the director of communications and later as a special assistant when he won the election.
