Ettore Messina began his coaching career with Virtus Bologna (1989-2002), where he won two EuroLeague Championships (1997-98 and 2000-01) but also lost two finals (1998-99 and 2001-02).

In addition, he won three Italian Cups in 1999, 2001, and 2002. Similarly, he joined Benetton Treviso for three years, where he won three Italian Cups and reached the EuroLeague final, which he lost.
