Shantanu Narayen is an Indian-American business executive and the current CEO of the multinational software corporation Adobe Systems Incorporated (CEO). Shantanu Narayen also serves on the board of the Adobe Foundation.

Shantanu Narayen was born on May 27, 1962, into a wealthy family in Hyderabad, India. His father owned a plastics company, and his mother taught American literature.

He grew up alongside his older brother. His parents encouraged him to pursue engineering instead of becoming a journalist.

After graduating from Hyderabad Public School, Narayen attended the University College of Engineering, Osmania University (UCE) to study electronics and communication engineering.

After graduating, he moved to the United States to further his education, eventually earning master’s degrees in business administration from the University of California’s Haas School of Business and in computer technology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Narayen chose Measurex Automation Systems over a well-known multinational corporation during campus hiring.

It provided the recent graduate with much-needed practical experience and was a well-funded and profitable venture. He joined Apple in 1989 and spent the next six years in a variety of executive positions.

During the so-called “Internet Boom” of the mid-1990s, he and his colleagues developed the concept for an image-sharing website, and Pictra Inc., one of the first picture-sharing websites, was founded in 1996.

After realizing that everyone would eventually switch from analog to digital photography, they created an ecosystem that allowed customers to drop off their roll of film and get digital photos.

However, after 12 to 14 months, it became clear to them that the funding and business strategy were still in their early stages.

Narayen admitted that he never planned his professional advancement and that after his first job, he was never hired or interviewed again.

He never moved from engineering to product management after earning his MBA because he believed that “if it seems right, it should work out.”

During his time at Apple, Gursharan Singh Sandhu of Apple Talk served as his mentor, teaching him the importance of pushing oneself and others. Following Apple, he worked briefly as the director of desktop and collaboration products at Silicon Graphics.

He joined Adobe Systems in 1998 as a senior vice president of global product research and rose through the ranks to become chief vice president of global products.

Bruce Chizen’s planned departure as CEO on December 1st, 2007 was announced in November. At the age of 45, Narayen succeeded Chizen as Chief Executive Officer of Adobe Systems.

He rose to the top of one of the industry’s major firms in just ten years due to his exceptional work ethic and thorough knowledge of the technology industry.

Narayen, a key player in Adobe’s success, has elevated the company to the status of a must-have tool for all websites and apps and has negotiated over 350 partnerships on their behalf.
