Alex was raised in a favela (a type of working-class slum in Brazil) and started working at a tire store when he was approximately 12 years old.
He began drinking and eventually became an alcoholic as a result of the influence of his more senior colleagues there.
In 2009, he began training in kickboxing to distract his attention and progressively free himself of his alcohol addiction. Since 2012, he has abstained from all forms of alcohol.
His first kickboxing trainer, who also helped Alex uncover his indigenous origins, gave him the nickname “Poatan.” ‘
Poatan’ loosely translates to ‘Hands of Stone’ in Tupi-Guarani (the most widely spread subgroup of the Tupian language family, which includes about 70 South American languages).
