Armenian-Ethiopian painter and art teacher who became the first contemporary African artist whose work was acquired by the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris. Alexander Boghossian was born on July 22, 1937, in Ethiopia. He and Augustus John both studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. He was awarded second prize at Haile Selassie I’s Jubilee Anniversary Celebration in 1954. This honor allowed him to secure a scholarship to continue his studies in Europe.
