Relationship, Married Life, Boyfriend/ Girlfriend

She met her future husband Billy Brown in 1979, and the two claim it was ‘love at first sight.’

Billy was 26 years old at the time, and Ami was only 15 years old.

Because of the predicament in her family and her attachment to Billy, the two decided to elope and marry.

Billy had previously been married for five years, and he had two children from that marriage.

Ami lived with Billy in Fort Worth, Texas, where he had a little plumbing business that he didn’t much love.

The couple decided to try something new and traveled around the United States in a family vehicle they purchased but finally sold to gather enough money to move to Alaska in the hopes of establishing a new life.

They boarded a ship in the early 1980s and traveled to Wrangell, Alaska; however, the movie was not as successful as they had hoped, and they struggled for their first two years due to a lack of funds, taking a few jobs in several towns, and were eventually stranded on Mosman Island for a good 18 months, enduring winter there.

They then relocated to Port Protection, confident that they could survive in the harsh environment.

They would have five children, which they raised in Alaska while still moving around, living in Wrangell, Hoonah, Juneau, Chichagof Island, and Haines, and occasionally traveling back to the lower states.

Ami Brown- Professional Career

Reality television producers discovered the Brown family and their peculiar Alaskan lifestyle in 2014.

They decided it would make an excellent television production, as well as contribute to the family’s income.

The majority of the show was shot on location in Hoonah and on Chichagof Island.

Early episodes of “Alaskan Bush People” featured the family traveling to various locations, building temporary huts before settling on Chicago Island.

They primarily bartered in order to survive, including their labor, transportation services, and wood in order to obtain the many commodities they require.

The family was investigated by the Alaska Department of Revenue in 2014, which resulted in the family being charged with 60 counts of first-degree unsworn falsification of their Permanent Fund Dividend paperwork for their residency, as well as first and second-degree theft between 2009 and 2012.

Billy bore the brunt of the charges, being charged with 24 counts of theft, including the theft of more than $13,000 in dividend money for himself and his family.

The state was led to assume that the family spent more than 180 days per year outside of Alaska, despite lying on their applications. Billy and his son Joshua pleaded guilty to lying on the forms the next year.

The family’s circumstances became even more severe when Ami was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017.

She stated that it would have been easy to give up and succumb to the disease, but she chose to fight.

Due to a lack of treatment facilities in Alaska, the family temporarily relocated to Southern California, where the radiation and chemotherapy treatment proved largely successful, as doctors told her later in the year that all signs of cancer had vanished from her body, which she would later declare in the media.

However, the sickness reappeared in early 2018, and the family is back in Southern California, where Ami is having additional therapy with the family’s support.

She hopes to return in the eighth season of “Alaskan Bush People,” which is set to premiere in late 2018.
