Barrett became a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Tennessee’s Rhodes College, where he earned a B.A. magna cum laude. in the field of English literature in 1994.

Barrett clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit after graduation, followed by a year clerking for Supreme Court Associate Justice and conservative icon Antonin Scalia.

Barrett began her legal career in 1999 at the famous Washington, D.C. law firm of Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin before transitioning to academics in 2001 as the John M. Olin Scholar at Law at George Washington University Law School.

Barrett returned to Notre Dame Law School in 2002 as an assistant professor, later becoming a full-tenured faculty member known for her expertise in federal courts, constitutional law, and statutory interpretation.

She was named Distinguished Professor of the Year three times and received the Diane and M.O. Miller was the Miller Research Chair of Law from 2014 until 2017.

During these years, Barrett began to gain national attention for her extremely conservative and Catholic convictions.

In 2012, she signed a statement calling President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandate that contraception be covered by health insurance plans a “grave violation of religious freedom.”
