In 1976, Lack joined CBS News and worked as a producer for the personality-driven TV show Who’s Who, which was created by 60 Minutes originator Don Hewitt.

Later, he became the executive producer of CBS Reports, a position he held for seven years.

Following that, he worked for four years as the executive producer of West 57th, a long-format news program, beginning in 1985.

The show was popular for combining new storytelling techniques and issues with 60 Minutes’ journalistic standards.

Lack became president of NBC News in 1993 to restore the television division’s reputation after it was uncovered that the news program Dateline had faked an explosion during a truck safety segment.

This gamble paid off, as NBC Nightly News with host Tom Brokaw became the top-rated nightly news program in just his third year.

Furthermore, he expanded Dateline from a weekly program to numerous nights per week.

However, he departed the news division in 2001 to become the president and CEO of NBC, the television network.

Andrew became Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment in 2003. Similarly, he oversaw a merger with BMG in 2004.

Lack was named CEO of the new Sony BMG, a joint venture with Germany’s Bertelsmann that resulted in the world’s second-largest music corporation.

He departed the company after 5 years in 2008.

Lack joined Bloomberg in 2008 as CEO of its Media Group, where he oversaw the company’s television, radio, and digital holdings.

During his tenure, he even cut losses in half and more than doubled the company’s revenue.

Lack returned to NBC News and MSNBC in 2015, following a controversy sparked by NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams, who misrepresented events that occurred while he was covering the 2003 Iraq War.

Following that, Andrew named Lester Holt as the NBC Nightly News anchor. 

The decision paid off when the show became a rating triumph.

Lack also announced closer collaboration between NBC News and MSNBC. 

In addition, he merged the digital operations of NBC News and MSNBC.
